Pashupatinath Temple and the Bagmati ghats in Kathmandu.

Pashupatinath is Nepal's main Shiva temple, set on the Bagmati in eastern Kathmandu. The gold-roofed sanctum is open only to Hindus. Other visitors walk the outer grounds and the far bank, where cremations at Aryaghat are part of daily life. The complex is a UNESCO monument zone, with smaller shrines and sadhus around the river. Go early for the morning puja, and expect large crowds on Maha Shivaratri. Foreign visitors pay an entry fee at the gate. Ask before photographing rituals, and keep a distance from families at the ghats.

  • Address: Pashupati Sadak, Gaushala, Kathmandu, Nepal
  • Hours: Outer grounds from early morning until evening. The inner sanctum follows priest timings and is for Hindus only.
  • How to Reach: About 5 km east of Thamel, on the airport side of the city. A taxi usually takes 20 to 40 minutes. Boudhanath is about 2 km farther northeast if you want both on one outing.
