Langtang National Park, set up in 1976, was Nepal's first Himalayan national park. It covers about 1,710 sq km of Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Sindhupalchok districts north of Kathmandu, including the Langtang valley, the holy lakes of Gosaikunda and the border with Tibet. Red pandas, Himalayan black bears, musk deer, tahr and many birds live in its forests and alpine meadows, along with Tamang villages.

The park is the closest major trekking area to Kathmandu. Most treks begin at Syabrubesi and follow the Langtang valley or the Gosaikunda route. A park entry permit is required; check current permit rules in Kathmandu before you set out.

  • How to Reach: Syabrubesi, the main trailhead, is a long day's drive north of Kathmandu by bus or jeep.
