Boudhanath Stupa

The great white stupa in Boudha, walked clockwise by Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims.

Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu, with prayer flags and the Buddha eyes.

Boudhanath is the large white stupa in the Boudha neighborhood, with the painted eyes of the Buddha and lines of prayer flags. Pilgrims walk clockwise around it, and monasteries, shops, and butter-lamp houses ring the square. The upper terrace is the usual place to stop and look back at the dome. Foreign visitors pay an entry fee. The stupa is a UNESCO monument. Sunrise and late afternoon are the quieter times to walk. This is a Buddhist stupa, not a Hindu temple.
