Jajmau is an ancient locality in the eastern part of Kanpur on the banks of the Ganga, considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the Gangetic plains. Archaeological excavations here have revealed artefacts from the Copper Hoard Culture, the Painted Grey Ware culture, and even earlier periods, suggesting habitation going back over 3,000 years. The area is associated with the Kashi kingdom of the Vedic era. Today Jajmau is also known for its leather tanneries, which are among the largest in India. The ancient mounds and the riverside setting carry the weight of thousands of years of human history.
