St. Angelo Fort

Portuguese laterite fort from 1505 overlooking Mappila Bay and the Arabian Sea.

St. Angelo Fort, also called Kannur Fort, was built by the Portuguese in 1505 on a headland above Mappila Bay. Laterite walls and bastions still frame wide views of the Arabian Sea, Dharmadam Island, and the fishing harbour below. Walk the ramparts for sunset, then drop toward the bay for a closer look at local boats. It pairs easily with nearby Payyambalam Beach and the Arakkal Museum.
