The Kanyakumari Bhagavathy Amman Temple, also known as the Devi Kanya Kumari Temple, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and the presiding deity of the entire district. Dedicated to the goddess Kanya Kumari, a virgin form of Parvati, the temple is perched right at the land's end where the three seas meet. Legend holds that the goddess awaited Lord Shiva here as a bride who was never wed. The temple's eastern gate remains closed to prevent the gem on the goddess's nose ring from distracting sailors out at sea.
