The Kanha zone is the central core safari zone of Kanha Tiger Reserve, named after the Kanha meadows where large herds of hard ground barasingha, chital and blackbuck graze. Open grassland edged with sal forest gives some of the best wildlife viewing in central India, with tigers, leopards, wild dogs and gaur often seen.

Kanha is one of four core zones with Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi, and is reached from the Khatia and Kisli side. Book core permits on the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department portal, forest.mponline.gov.in. The core is open from 1 October to 30 June, with morning and afternoon shifts. Permits for the Kanha zone sell out quickly, so book early.
