Kangra Fort

Largest fort in the Indian Himalayas, built by Katoch Rajputs with temples and gateways inside its walls.

Kangra Fort stands on a ridge between the Manjhi and Banganga rivers, reputed to be the oldest and largest fort in the Himalayan region. Built by the Katoch Rajputs around the fourth century BC, its stone ramparts and gateways blend Rajput and Mughal influences accumulated over centuries of sieges. Ancient temples and ruined palaces survive within the walls, though a 1905 earthquake damaged much of the upper structure that has since been partly restored.
