Vaikunta Perumal Temple

An 8th century Pallava era Vishnu temple with three sanctums showing the deity seated, reclining, and standing.

Vaikunta Perumal Temple, also known as Parameswara Vinnagaram, was built in the 8th century by Pallava king Nandivarman II and stands alongside Kailasanathar Temple as one of Kanchipuram's oldest structures. Its inner passage is lined with lion pillars and worn but detailed carvings depicting Pallava history, while the sanctum itself is arranged on three levels showing Vishnu seated, reclining, and standing, with the upper floors opened to visitors only on Ekadashi days. Now a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India, the temple draws a steadier trickle of history focused visitors rather than the large crowds seen at the town's active pilgrimage sites.
