Hoollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary lies about twenty kilometres from Jorhat and holds the distinction of sheltering India's only ape species, the hoolock gibbon. The sanctuary's mixed forest of evergreen and semi evergreen trees also supports capped langurs, slow lorises and a wide variety of resident and migratory birds. Guided walking trails let visitors move quietly through the canopy in search of gibbon families, with morning hours offering the best chance of sightings and calls.
