Mehrangarh Fort

One of the largest forts in India, towering 400 feet above Jodhpur with sweeping views of the Blue City below.

Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, on a rocky hill 125 metres above the city. It is one of the largest and best-preserved forts in India, with massive walls up to 36 metres high in places. The fort contains several palaces including Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal, each with extraordinary carved stonework, latticed windows, and painted ceilings. A museum inside houses an exceptional collection of royal artifacts, weapons, palanquins, and elephant howdahs. The fort has seven gates, each built to commemorate a military victory. It has appeared in several Hollywood productions including The Dark Knight Rises. The views of the blue-painted old city below are among the most iconic sights in Rajasthan.
