Mandore was the original capital of the Marwar kingdom before Jodhpur was founded and sits about 9 km north of the city. The gardens here contain the royal cenotaphs of the Jodhpur rulers, elaborate sandstone structures with carved chhatris and towers. The Hall of Heroes is a unique rock-cut gallery with 16 figures of deities and folk heroes carved directly into the cliff face and painted in vivid colours. Above the gardens sit the ruins of the old Mandore palace and fort. The site is well-maintained and far less crowded than Mehrangarh, making it a good escape for those who want to explore Marwar heritage at a quieter pace.
