Mahamandir, meaning Great Temple, is a large Shiva temple built in 1812 on the Mandore Road, about 2 km from the city centre. The temple is supported by 84 intricately carved pillars, each decorated with figures of humans depicted in various yoga postures. The walls and ceilings are covered with detailed paintings and carvings depicting Shiva and Parvati. It is considered one of the finest examples of Marwar temple architecture from the early 19th century. The temple complex is quiet and contemplative compared to the busier tourist sites and is particularly popular with devotees on Mahashivratri.
