Balsamand Lake was built in 1159 by Balak Rao Parihar as a reservoir for Mandore. It lies about 5 km from Jodhpur on the Jodhpur to Mandore road and is roughly 1 km long. The summer palace on its bank, in carved red sandstone, was added later by the Jodhpur rulers and now runs as the Balsamand Lake Palace hotel. Around it are old mango, papaya and pomegranate orchards and gardens where peacocks and jackals are often seen. The palace buildings are for hotel guests and diners, so casual visitors mostly see the lake and gardens.
