Tanot Mata Temple sits about 130 km from Jaisalmer near the Pakistan border and is managed by the Border Security Force. The temple is dedicated to Tanot Mata, a local goddess, and became famous after the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War when reportedly hundreds of bombs dropped by Pakistani aircraft near the temple failed to explode. The unexploded bombs are preserved and displayed in a small museum inside the temple complex. BSF jawans perform the daily puja here, and the tricolour flies prominently over the complex. The remote desert drive to Tanot is itself part of the experience.
