Kuldhara is a ghost village located about 18 km from Jaisalmer that was mysteriously abandoned overnight around 1825 by its entire community of Paliwal Brahmins. The most popular legend holds that the village chief fled with all 84 settlements in the region to escape persecution by a tyrannical minister. The ruins of stone houses, temples, wells, and streets still stand largely intact, creating an eerie and fascinating landscape. The Archaeological Survey of India has preserved several structures. The site is often visited after dark by those looking for a more atmospheric experience, though daytime visits are easier.
