Maya Devi Temple

One of the oldest temples in Haridwar and a Shakti Peetha, believed to mark the spot where Goddess Sati's heart fell to earth.

Maya Devi Temple is considered one of the oldest temples in Haridwar and holds the status of a Shakti Peetha. According to legend, the navel and heart of Goddess Sati fell at this very spot after Lord Vishnu dismembered her body to console a grieving Shiva. The presiding deity Maya Devi is three-headed and four-armed and is regarded as the Adhisthatri Devi, the guardian goddess, of Haridwar itself. The temple is part of the Panch Tirth and sees a constant flow of pilgrims year-round. Unlike the hilltop temples, this one is located in the heart of the city and easy to visit on foot.
