About Royal Enclosure

The Royal Enclosure is a large fortified area that once housed the palaces, administrative buildings, and other important structures of the Vijayanagara Empire. Covering an area of approximately 59,000 square meters, this was the heart of the Vijayanagara capital. The enclosure contains the remains of several important structures including the King's Audience Hall, the Mahanavami Dibba (a platform for royal ceremonies), the Stepped Tank, and various other administrative and residential buildings. The area is surrounded by high walls and was accessible only to royalty and important officials. The structures within the enclosure showcase the architectural grandeur and administrative sophistication of the Vijayanagara Empire. The Royal Enclosure provides a comprehensive view of the royal lifestyle, administrative systems, and the scale of the Vijayanagara capital. It is one of the most important areas in Hampi for understanding the political and social structure of the empire.
