Jai Vilas Palace and Scindia Museum

Jai Vilas Palace was built in 1874 by Maharaja Jayajirao Scindia at a cost of one crore rupees, originally to welcome the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) in 1875. Designed by British architect Sir Michael Filose, the three-storey palace blends Tuscan, Italian-Doric, and Corinthian architectural styles across its three floors and 400 rooms.

The Scindia Museum occupies 35 rooms and is one of the richest royal collections in India. The Durbar Hall is famous for a pair of chandeliers each weighing over three tonnes - the ceiling was tested with eight elephants before they were hung. The museum also displays a silver miniature train that once served cigars and brandy at royal dinners, vintage cars, weaponry, and a 12-year-woven carpet from Gwalior. Part of the palace remains the private residence of the Scindia family.
