Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum

Gujari Mahal was built in the 15th century by Tomar ruler Raja Man Singh for his beloved wife Queen Mrignayani, who hailed from the Gujar community - hence the name. The palace stands at the base of Gwalior Fort and is one of the better preserved examples of Tomar-period architecture in the city.

Today it houses the Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum, one of the most important archaeological collections in Madhya Pradesh. The centrepiece is the Shalbhanjika - a celebrated stone sculpture considered one of the finest examples of classical Indian sculpture, depicting a woman grasping a tree branch. The museum also houses an extensive collection of temple sculptures, inscriptions, coins, and terracotta from sites across the Gwalior region.

Open Tuesday to Sunday. Entry fee applies. Located at the foot of the fort hill, making it a natural first stop before ascending to the fort itself.
