The Institute of Mural Painting was established in 1989 by the Guruvayur Devaswom at East Nada, near the temple complex, following a 1970 fire that destroyed murals in the sanctum. It is the only institution of its kind in India, offering a five-year National Diploma Course in traditional Kerala mural painting through the Gurukul method of residential apprenticeship. Students work on mythological and devotional themes using natural pigments. The institute's gallery displays completed works, and visitors can watch artists in practice, making it a rewarding cultural stop alongside the temple.
