Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple

A coastal Shiva temple in Gokarna housing the Atmalinga brought by Ravana from Kailash, spiritually equated with Kashi, with entry restricted to Hindus.

Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple is one of the most sacred Shiva temples on the west coast of India, often compared to Varanasi in spiritual importance. The main shrine houses the Atmalinga, a powerful Shiva lingam said to have been brought by Ravana from Kailash. According to legend, Lord Ganesha tricked Ravana into placing the lingam on the ground at Gokarna, where it became permanently fixed. The temple complex follows a strict traditional architecture and religious code, and non-Hindus are not permitted inside the sanctum. The surrounding coastal town and nearby beaches add to the mystical atmosphere of this ancient site.
