Kapil Muni Temple at Gangasagar (Sagar Island) marks the ashram of the sage Kapila, son of Kardama Rishi, who is credited with founding the Samkhya school of philosophy. According to the Ramayana, it was here that Sage Kapila burned the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara to ashes with his divine gaze. The spot where the Ganga meets the Bay of Bengal is considered one of the holiest confluences in India, and the Makar Sankranti fair held here every January draws millions of pilgrims for a holy dip, second only to Kumbh Mela in scale.
