Nelyadi Beedu is the tiled-roof dwelling where Jain chieftain Birmanna Pergade and his wife Ammu Ballalthi lived roughly 800 years ago when Dharmasthala was still known as Kuduma. According to the founding legend of the kshetra, the four Dharma Daivas appeared here in human form and instructed Pergade to dedicate his home to their worship and devote his life to the propagation of dharma. He obliged without question, building a new home nearby. This act of surrender gave birth to the entire tradition of service and inter-faith harmony that defines Dharmasthala. The preserved structure remains the spiritual heart of the complex.
