Annappa Betta

Sacred hill housing shrines of the four Dharma Daivas; entry restricted to male devotees.

Annappa Betta, also called Badinede Betta, rises about 1.5 km southeast of the main temple and holds the four shrines of the Dharma Daivas, Kalarahu, Kalarkai, Kumaraswamy, and Kanyakumari. These guardian deities are at the spiritual root of Dharmasthala's founding legend. Notably, the shrines contain no idols; in one dwelling a swing lamp burns continuously as a symbol of divine presence. Entry is restricted to male devotees, a tradition upheld since the hill's founding lore. The hilltop offers a calm, forested atmosphere distinct from the main complex.
