Tapovan Hills lie about 10 km from Deoghar and derive their name from their long history as a forest retreat for sages engaged in tapas or penance. The landscape is forested and hilly, with a network of natural caves that visitors can explore. One of the caves contains a naturally placed Shiva lingam and is associated with the penance of sage Valmiki. The Taponath Mahadev Temple at the site is dedicated to Lord Shiva and draws pilgrims alongside trekkers who come for the scenic terrain. The area offers a quieter and more contemplative alternative to the busier pilgrim sites in the town.
