A scene from the Ramlila at Ramlila Maidan, New Delhi
Ramlila Maidan is a large open ground between Old Delhi and New Delhi, near Turkman Gate and Delhi Gate, stretching between Asaf Ali Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Marg. According to the Shri Ram Lila Committee, the site was a pond until the early 1930s, when it was filled in so the annual Ramlila could move here from the sandy Yamuna floodplains behind the Red Fort. Every Navratri the committee stages the Ramayana here, ending with the burning of a large Ravan effigy and fireworks on Dussehra. The ground is also known for the political rallies and movements it has hosted since the freedom struggle, with leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru addressing crowds here. Outside the festival season it is used for public meetings, fairs and events, so check what is on before you visit.
