Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple lies inside a natural cave on the banks of the Tons river, about 6.5 km from central Dehradun. Its name comes from tapak, meaning to drip, since water flows continuously from the cave ceiling onto the sacred lingam, considered swayambhu or self manifested. Sulphur springs near the temple are valued for their therapeutic properties and draw visitors for a purifying dip before darshan. A major fair is held here during Shivratri.
