The Anamalai Tiger Reserve, also known as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, covers 958 sq km of the Anaimalai Hills in the districts of Coimbatore and Tiruppur. It is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and one of the most biodiverse protected areas in peninsular India. The reserve is home to tigers, elephants, leopards, gaur, sloth bears, and the rare lion-tailed macaque. The Valparai plateau within the reserve is a tea estate town at 1,000 metres with excellent wildlife sighting opportunities along the roads. Topslip, the main entry point about 64 km from Coimbatore, offers jeep safaris, elephant safaris, and nature treks. The reserve receives good rainfall and is best visited between October and June.
