Churu Fort (Churu Garh)

A 17th-century hilltop fort with a legendary battle story, where silver jewelry was melted into cannon shells to defend the town.

Churu Fort, also known as Churu Garh, was built around 1694 by Thakur Kushal Singh of the Rathore clan. It sits at the center of town and is famous for a remarkable episode from the 1871 siege, when Bikaner forces attacked and the defenders ran out of ammunition. The women of Churu donated their silver ornaments, which were melted down to cast cannon shells. The fort has several gates adorned with carvings and offers sweeping views of the surrounding desert town.
