Young gharials at the breeding centre in Chitwan.
The Gharial Conservation Breeding Centre at Kasara, near the park headquarters, was started in 1978 to save the critically endangered gharial, the fish eating crocodile with a long thin snout. Eggs are collected from the rivers, hatched and the young reared in pools until they are large enough to release into the Rapti and Narayani. The centre also keeps mugger crocodiles and turtles. It is a good stop for children and anyone who has seen gharials in the Chambal.
