Hirekolale Lake was originally built to supply drinking water and irrigation to Chikmagalur town, but its setting against the backdrop of the Mullayanagiri hills has made it one of the more photographed sunset spots in the district. The still water reflects the surrounding hills particularly well in the evening light, drawing both casual visitors and photographers. It requires no trekking or special access, making it an easy stop to close out a day built around more strenuous hikes.
