Gangaikonda Cholapuram Brihadeeshwara Temple is one of three living Chola temples designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated about 42 km from Chidambaram in the Ariyalur district. It was built by Rajendra Chola I in 1025 CE to commemorate his victorious northern campaign, during which his armies reportedly carried Ganga water southward, giving the site its name meaning the city of the Chola who conquered the Ganga. The temple's 55-metre vimana, intricately carved sculptures, and massive Nandi are extraordinarily well preserved. The site sees far fewer crowds than Thanjavur, making for an unhurried and deeply absorbing visit.
