San Thome Basilica

A basilica in Mylapore believed to stand over the tomb of St Thomas the Apostle, one of only three such churches in the world.

San Thome Basilica is built over what is believed to be the tomb of St Thomas the Apostle, who tradition says arrived in the region and was buried here. It is one of only three churches in the world raised over an apostle's tomb, alongside St Peter's in Rome and one in Spain. The current Gothic style structure was rebuilt in the 1890s and later given the rank of basilica. Since it sits close to Kapaleeswarar Temple, most visitors combine both stops on the same walk through Mylapore.
