Set up in 1966 by a group of painters and sculptors from the Madras School of Arts, Cholamandal Artists' Village is the largest working artists' commune in India. More than 20 resident painters and sculptors still live and work here, continuing what became known as the Madras Movement in Indian modern art. Visitors can walk through galleries and open studio spaces, and see sculptures placed around the grounds. Located in Injambakkam along the coastal stretch south of the city, it fills a real gap for anyone looking for contemporary art and living culture rather than temples or colonial buildings.
