Rock Garden

A 40-acre sculpture garden made entirely from recycled industrial waste, secretly built by Nek Chand from 1957.

Rock Garden near Sukhna Lake is one of India's most visited tourist attractions and one of the world's most remarkable outsider art installations. Road inspector Nek Chand Saini secretly began collecting industrial waste, broken bangles, discarded ceramics and urban rubble in 1957 and transformed a forest clearing into a sprawling fantasy of thousands of sculptures, cascading waterfalls and arched walkways. Discovered by authorities in 1975, when it had already grown to 12 acres, the garden was recognised for its extraordinary character and Nek Chand was appointed its official curator. It now covers 40 acres and receives around 5,000 visitors daily.
