Muchalinda Lake, also called the Lotus Pond, sits just beside the main temple and takes its name from the serpent king said to have shielded Buddha from a storm during his sixth week of meditation. A statue shows Buddha seated on Muchalinda's coiled hood. The lake's calm waters and surrounding greenery make it a quiet spot for reflection between visits to the busier parts of the temple complex.
