The Great Buddha Statue rises 64 feet in an open air setting, depicting Buddha in deep meditation atop a lotus. Built from sandstone and red granite blocks by roughly 12,000 masons over seven years, it was the first large Buddha statue constructed in India and was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 1989. A hollow staircase inside leads up through thousands of small bronze Buddha images to the statue's chest.
