Bodhi Tree

Descendant of the fig tree under which Buddha meditated for seven weeks and attained enlightenment.

The Bodhi Tree growing beside Mahabodhi Temple is a direct descendant of the original fig tree under which Buddha sat in meditation for seven weeks after attaining enlightenment. Pilgrims gather here to meditate quietly beneath its branches, and monks perform daily rituals nearby. Buddhists worldwide mark Bodhi Day each December 8 in its honour. The tree stands at the heart of the temple complex, making it one of the most visited sites in the town.
