Smritivan Earthquake Memorial and Museum on Bhujio Hill is one of India's most remarkable contemporary museums, built to commemorate the devastating earthquake of 26 January 2001 that killed nearly 20,000 people in Kutch. The museum's seven thematic galleries trace the earthquake's geological causes, its human impact, the scale of destruction, the remarkable community-led rebuilding and Kutch's cultural and ecological identity. The architecture and landscape design, blending naturally into the hill, are themselves extraordinary. The memorial grove of 13,000 trees planted in memory of the dead makes the hilltop a place of quiet reflection.
