Hamirsar Lake

The central lake of Bhuj, built by its founders for water conservation, a peaceful promenade and birdwatching spot.

Hamirsar Lake lies at the heart of Bhuj city and has been its social and ecological centre since the city's founding. Built by the rulers of Bhuj for water conservation and domestic supply in an otherwise arid landscape, the lake is a genuine oasis in the Kutch desert. The lakeside promenade is the preferred evening walk for residents, and the water attracts a variety of resident and migratory birds. The surrounding gardens and ghats are used for religious rituals, festivals and daily recreation, giving the lake a layered civic identity.
