Chhatedi

18th-century royal cenotaphs of the Jadeja rulers, blending Islamic and Rajput architecture with intricate stone carvings.

Chhatedi is the royal cenotaph complex of the Jadeja Maharaos of Kutch, a series of umbrella-shaped dome structures commissioned primarily by Rao Lakhpatji in the 18th century. The cenotaphs blend Islamic and Rajput architectural traditions: arched gateways, carved sandstone pillars, perforated stone screens and domed chhatris create an atmosphere of faded grandeur. Though damaged by the 2001 earthquake, the surviving stonework remains extraordinary and the site is one of the most photogenic and historically significant in Bhuj. Sunrise and late afternoon light are ideal for photography.
