Rajarani Temple

An 11th-century temple in Bhubaneswar built from distinctive red and gold sandstone, celebrated for its ornate tower and erotic sculptures on its outer walls.

Rajarani Temple in Bhubaneswar is an 11th-century temple celebrated above all for the extraordinary quality of its sculptural decoration, widely regarded as among the finest in Odisha. The temple takes its name from the rajarani stone, a distinctive red and yellow sandstone used in its construction. Unlike most Orissan temples, Rajarani is not dedicated to a specific deity and has no presiding image in its sanctum, suggesting it may have been left incomplete. What draws visitors is the outer surface of the tower and its projecting turrets, which are covered in a rich programme of sculpture including nayikas (women in graceful poses), dvarapalas (door guardians), couples, and the eight Dikpalas with their attendants and vehicles. The figures are notable for their sensuous forms, elaborate jewellery, and the psychological depth of their expressions. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the temple and hosts the annual Rajarani Music Festival in its grounds each January.
