Lohagarh Fort

The Iron Fort of Bharatpur, one of India's strongest fortifications, which repelled multiple British attacks.

Lohagarh Fort, meaning Iron Fort, was built in the early 18th century by Maharaja Suraj Mal, the founder of the Bharatpur Jat kingdom. Unlike the ornate hill forts of Rajasthan, Lohagarh derives its strength from earthwork ramparts, a wide moat and concentric defensive walls designed to absorb cannon fire. It successfully repelled repeated assaults by the British East India Company and was breached only after sustained siege. Within the fort stand Kothi Khas, Mahal Khas, Moti Mahal, Kishori Mahal and the two victory towers: Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj, the latter commemorating the defeat of British forces. The Government Museum occupies part of the complex.
