Deeg Fort surrounds the palace complex at Deeg and was built by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1730 to defend his newly established Jat capital. The square plan fort stands on a slight elevation with massive mud and rubble walls reinforced by 12 imposing bastions, the largest being the northwest Lakha Burj, each originally armed with cannons. A wide shallow moat encircles the entire structure and access is via a single bridge on the northern side. The fort withstood multiple Mughal assaults and also saw action during the Anglo-Jat conflicts of 1804.
