Band Baretha Wildlife Reserve

A serene 44 km away wildlife reserve and reservoir with 200 bird species including the elusive Black Bittern.

Band Baretha Wildlife Reserve, 44 km from Bharatpur, is a former royal hunting reserve centred on a large reservoir built on the Kakund River between 1866 and 1897 by successive Bharatpur maharajas. The reservoir and surrounding forest harbour over 200 bird species including the rare and elusive Black Bittern, making it a rewarding alternative destination for birders who have covered Keoladeo. A palace within the reserve, private property of the Bharatpur royal family, adds historical character to the landscape. The reserve sees far fewer visitors than the national park, giving it a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path quality.
