Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 400 sq km of sal forest and grassland in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, on the Nepal border. It was set up in 1975 and, with Dudhwa National Park and Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary, forms the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. The Girwa river is home to gharials, mugger crocodiles and Gangetic dolphins, and tigers, leopards and elephants roam the forest.

Boat trips on the Girwa and jungle safaris are booked on the UP Ecotourism website, upecotourism.in. The sanctuary usually opens in November and closes in mid June, and boat trips may start later in the season if the river is still high.
