Tapt Kund is a natural geothermal spring situated at the entrance of the Badrinath Temple, between the sanctum and the Alaknanda River. The sulphur-rich water maintains a temperature of 45 to 55°C year-round, a remarkable geological phenomenon given the sub-zero surroundings. Pilgrims take a ritual bath here before entering the temple to purify body and soul, a practice integral to the Char Dham yatra. The spring is believed to be the abode of Agni Dev, granted by Lord Vishnu as a boon. Adjacent to it lies the smaller Narad Kund, where the idol of Badrinarayan is said to have been discovered by Adi Shankaracharya.
