Upper and Lower Shivalaya Temples

Twin seventh century rock cut Shiva shrines on Badami's northern hill, each offering panoramic valley views.

The Upper Shivalaya and Lower Shivalaya sit along the ridge of Badami's northern hill, both dating to the seventh century Chalukya period. The lower shrine retains only its sanctum and a Dravidian tower, while the upper temple survives more fully and gives a sweeping panorama of the town and lake below. Both are easily combined with a visit to Badami Fort since they lie along the same walking route.
