Mahakuteshwara Temple Complex

Sixth century cluster of Shiva temples near Badami, notable for historic Chalukya inscriptions on pillar and porch.

Mahakuteshwara Temple takes its name from Mahakuta, meaning the great group, a reference to the numerous Shiva shrines gathered here. Built between the sixth and eighth centuries, the complex is valued for two inscriptions on a pillar and porch that record Chalukya history. A sacred tank surrounded by mantapas sits at the centre, and the peaceful grounds make it a good half day trip combined with a Badami temple circuit.
